Located on a prominent intersection in downtown Port of Spain, this exterior renovation of a two-storey commercial building started out as a commission to design a new carriage gate. A series of ad-hoc additions and poor maintenance resulted in the existing structure’s incoherent and unsightly appearance. Working together with an astute client, we shared the belief the building’s distinguished vernacular elements needed to be preserved as much as possible. The introduction of texture and tone subtly reduces the monolithic building mass at street level, while the designs for the carriage gate and corbels were inspired by historic industrial port buildings.
